Every two years I have the chance to be totally, completely and emotionally ruinously let-down by a sporting event…such are the travails of supporting the Dutch national team in international competition. Considered by all to be the best nation never to have lifted the World Cup, Holland boasts only the 1988 European Championships as an international honor.
They were the best team at the World Cup in 1974 and 1978 only to lose in the final and were the best team in 1994 only to be defeated in the best game of the tournament by an offisde Romario and were top again in 1998 only to lose on penalties to a completely outplayed Brazil. They have been even more imperious in the European Championships, with 1996 and 2000 just more examples of gorgeous-like-The-Pretty-AE play coming up short in a penalty shoot-out to an Italy team that was more defensive than my post about Midwesterners.
It has been a long, hard history of supporting the Oranje.
But I am back at it again as Holland open their campaign against reigning world champions Italy.
Luckily, this time around expectations are lower than low and I have had my heart broken so many times that I am expecting it…which makes it a little bit easier. A little bit.
All that said, I am off for the afternoon and wish you all well with a big “Hup Holland!”
