Apparently MySpace and Facebook are losing users in significant numbers – each more than 1 million in September. They are not the only social networking sites to lose users, either.
Social networking has always seemed strange to me; the collecting of virtual friends that you (or at least I) don’t ever really talk to in real life anymore (if ever) never seemed likely to replace instant messaging, email, phone calls and meeting up with your real friends. Or to be as much fun.
Also, those sites are hard to keep up with.
Maybe if you’re a middle school or high school kid you have the time (and the inclination to show off your life). But even then…they’re a lot of work.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they turned out to be a flash in the pan, at least in terms of the advertising potential.
